Tangier Inaugurates Jewish Memory Museum after Rehabilitation Work

Tangier – The Bet Yehudah Jewish memory museum in the Medina of Tangier was inaugurated on Friday, crowning the rehabilitation project of the building of the Assayag Synagogue, which required a total budget of MAD 2 million.

This synagogue has been the subject of rehabilitation work as part of the rehabilitation and enhancement program of the Medina of Tangier, which focused espacially on restoring all places of worship of strong civilizational significance.

This program is carried out, in accordance with the High Guidance of HM King Mohammed VI, by the Agency for the Promotion and Development of the North (APDN) in partnership with the Wilaya of the region of Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima and the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication.

The project focused on the reconstruction of the synagogue building, which had been abandoned for more than 60 years and was in danger of collapsing at any moment, resulting in a synagogue fully respecting its components dating from over a century.

In parallel with the rehabilitation of the synagogue, a committee of the Jewish community of Tangier has proceeded to finance and carry out the work of scenography of the Bet Yehudah museum, for the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage specific to the Judaism of Megorachim, established in the northern area of the Kingdom.
