“The position of the United States on Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara transcends day-to-day politics and short-term agendas – which is exactly how it should be,” Dark told MAP.
“This consistency and clarity make the best foundation for strong allies, such as the United States and Morocco,” he pointed out.
This increasing, tangible support from such diverse international voices, is a powerful reminder that the Sahara conflict should have been resolved years ago and that Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative is the peaceful, compromise way to do it, the expert added.
Morocco’s allies must continue to back up their support with actions in forums where they have influence, such as the United Nations Security Council, said Calvin Dark, Principal & Co-founder of RC Communications research centre.
“Ambiguity and silence hinder progress, which is in no country or people’s interest,” he added, noting that these same powers “must also make clear to Algeria and the Polisario Front that they must come to the negotiating table to end this conflict and move forward – because moving backwards is not an option for Morocco, the region or its allies around the world.”
