Held for the first time in Africa, this training course is part of the IAEA’s Regulatory Infrastructure Development Project, which aims to help participating countries establish or strengthen their regulatory infrastructures to ensure effective and sustainable radiation protection and security of radioactive materials.
The purpose of the training course is to build up the practical skills of the participants in the implementation of the IAEA’s radiation and nuclear safety standards applicable to the regulatory functions and processes of review and assessment, licensing, inspection and sanctioning in the medical field.
In a statement to MAP on the occasion of the launch of this training, the acting director of AMSSNuR, Mounji Zniber said this course was primarily intended for French-speaking African countries to achieve effective training to familiarize participants with international standards in the field of radiation protection and nuclear safety.
“Cooperation with the IAEA, which was consolidated after the last visit of the Director General of the Agency last June, reinforces the area of research in licensing and inspection in radiation safety, nuclear safety and in medical fields,” he said.
According to Zniber, all participants “will be able to enrich their knowledge through theoretical and practical training, such as visiting some clinics and health structures in Morocco to discover how to conduct inspections and put into practice the regulatory missions of the AMSSNuR.”
“The purpose of this training is to reaffirm all the international bases on the protection of radioactive sources and radioactive materials, as well as their proper management,” Kevin Hocde, nuclear security engineer in France, said in a similar statement.
For his part, Said Said Mouhtar, a member of the nuclear safety authority in Comoros, stressed that this training will help his country to understand the challenges related to nuclear safety in Comoros.
The training program includes lectures, exercises, presentation of case studies and exchange of national experiences in the implementation of regulatory functions and medical practices.
Seven national and international experts in addition to 32 participants, from Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Togo and Morocco, are taking part in the training course.
