“During this meeting, we discussed many issues, including the April 2022 agreement, which has been implemented via bills carried by the government, the objective being to improve incomes,” revealed Khadija Zoumi, UGTM member, in a statement to the press after a meeting with Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch as part of the second round of social dialogue.
“The discussion focused on the need to reduce taxes, following the weakening of purchasing power due to rising prices and the global economy,” said Zoumi, on behalf of the secretary general of the UGTM.
“The UGTM appreciates the government’s understanding of these proposals,” said the trade union leader, pleading for the improvement of the remuneration of provincial, regional and directors and calling for “reviewing the basic schemes.”
For his part, Moroccan Workers’ Union (UMT) Secretary General Miloudi Moukharik said that the trade union center welcomes the government’s commitment to respect the agreements of social dialogue in its first round.
Moukharik explained that “this round […] was an opportunity to assess the decisions taken, those that have been implemented and what is being developed,” welcoming the willingness of the government to honor its commitments.
Regarding the increase in wages, the union leader recalled that the UMT has reaffirmed, during its negotiations with the head of government, that this increase should concern all wages.
This meeting also focused on the issue of lowering the Income Tax (IR), he said, calling “unfair” this tax is paid by employees systematically, at a high rate reaching 38% of salary.
