Chaired by the Secretary General of the Department of Maritime Fisheries, Zakia Driouich, and the Deputy Director, Head of the EU Fisheries Management Unit in the Mediterranean, Valerie Laine, this meeting was marked by the examination of elements of reflection on new proposals for recommendations and resolutions to be considered at the 45th session of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean, to be held in November 2022 in Albania, said the Department of Maritime Fisheries in a statement.
The conclusions and recommendations of this meeting relate mainly to the strengthening of cooperation in the development of monitoring and control devices for fisheries and the establishment of specific management plans in response to the worrying state of stocks of fisheries resources in the Mediterranean, especially for the future small pelagics.
It is also about the development of scientific research programs aimed at the preservation of marine ecosystems and vulnerable species, in particular marine turtles and invasive species, and the favorable agreement of Morocco for the establishment of a fishing area with restricted access (FRA) in the region “Mont du Câbliers” in the Alboran Sea.
During this meeting, the EU welcomed the efforts made by Morocco in terms of coordination for the elaboration of a regional management plan for red seabream, a species in overexploitation, in order to rebuild the stock of this species and consequently preserve jobs and investments.
The EU has also welcomed the efforts made by the Kingdom in terms of collaboration, particularly within the Regional Fisheries Management Organizations.
