UN: Morocco Has Achieved ‘Great Progress’ in Education Reform Thanks to High Royal Guidelines

United Nations (New York) – Thanks to the High Royal Guidelines, Morocco has achieved “a great progress” in the process of reform and improvement of the education system with a view to achieving a “real educational renaissance”, said Monday in New York, the Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch.

“Thanks to the High Royal guidance, Morocco has made great progress in the process of reform and improvement of the education system with a view to achieving a true educational renaissance, in line with the ambitions of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the strategic objectives of the new development model,” said Akhannouch before the high-level meeting of the UN Summit on Transforming Education.

In this sense, Morocco has developed a roadmap for the reform of the education system 2022-2026, based on broad national consultations and in accordance with a participatory methodology promoting the contribution of all parties involved in the transformation of education, including teachers, students and their families, he explained.

The Head of Government said, in this regard, that this roadmap focuses on three main areas, aimed at enabling students to acquire basic skills, improve the performance of the teacher and his ability to ensure the transformation of education and raise the level of school through the creation of modern and open educational institutions.

This roadmap also aims to achieve three goals by 2026: reduce by one third the rate of school dropout, increase by 70% the number of students who acquire basic skills by improving learning and knowledge, and double the number of students who have benefited from semi-school and alternative activities, continued Akhannouch, at the summit held on the sidelines of the 77th General Assembly of the UN.

The Head of Government also noted that in order to meet this challenge and achieve the goals set, the government is committed to involving all stakeholders, in accordance with the principles of good governance, while making efforts to mobilize the necessary funding and exploring innovative approaches to support the reform and ensure sustainable funding.

It is also to conclude partnerships at bilateral and multilateral level with international partners, he said.

The Head of Government also stressed that in execution of the high royal vision concerning South-South cooperation, Morocco spares no effort to implement promising cooperation projects in the field of education and training with partner countries and launch concrete initiatives like the initiative of HM King Mohammed VI to create “an African institute for lifelong learning”.

While reiterating Morocco’s call for urgent action to achieve the expected transformation of education and the education financing initiative, Akhannouch reaffirmed the Kingdom’s commitment to support the global partnership for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, particularly in the framework of the high-level commission concerned with the SDG-4 on education.

Akhannouch chairs the Moroccan delegation to the UN General Assembly, on the high instructions of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
