Speaking at the 4th edition of the International Conference on Sustainable Mobility (CMID), Chami, added that this energy transition of the Kingdom is based, among other things, on accelerating the development of renewable energy including solar and wind power and energy efficiency.
In his speech focused mainly on the themes of “electric mobility”, “energy transition”, “the field of green hydrogen” and “the Carbon Tax”, Chami noted that the New Development Model (NMD) has advocated to make green energy a lever for attractiveness and development, while strengthening the energy security of Morocco.
He recalled that the main guidelines of the NMD in 2021 have confirmed the recommendations of the CESE which had called for a reconfiguration of public policies affecting energy, to establish Morocco as a global player in the renewable energy sector.
Morocco, which imports more than 90% of its energy needs, a dependence that constitutes a vulnerability to external energy shocks, has put in place, in 2009, an ambitious strategy of renewable energy in order to strengthen its sovereignty in energy, while pursuing its ambition on the environmental level to meet the challenge of climate change, he explained.
This strategy has enabled Morocco to achieve by the end of 2021, an energy mix where the weight of renewable energy reaches 37.8%, or 4. 067 MW, he said, noting that the Kingdom is committed in 2021, through its low-carbon strategy to 2050, to achieve a share of 80% of renewable energy in the energy mix and accelerate the electrification of uses, investment in the development of new transport infrastructure low in carbon and the integration of green hydrogen for the decarbonization of the economy including the transport sector.
