Seoul – The Moroccan Embassy in South Korea announced on Sunday that no Moroccan national was among the victims of the deadly stampede in Seoul.

“In the wake of the tragic stampede that occurred during the Halloween celebrations in Seoul-Itaewon on Saturday night, which left more than 150 dead and dozens injured, the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Seoul announces to all members of the Moroccan community in the Republic of Korea that it is in continuous contact with the Korean authorities and that no victim has been registered so far among Moroccan citizens”, said a statement by the Moroccan diplomatic representation.

In the context of tracking and keeping abreast of the developments of this tragedy, all members of the Moroccan community have been made available for inquiries, and for each emergency, through the following numbers: +82-2 792 7097 (office) and +8210-31537-7097 (mobile).

At least 153 people have been killed and 82 others injured in the deadly stampede as huge crowds of partygoers, many in their late teens and 20s, converged in the entertainment district for Halloween celebrations.

The deadliest stampede in South Korea’s history happened Saturday night in a narrow four-meter-wide downhill alley after tens of thousands of people visited the area for Halloween.

The stampede marked the worst tragedy in South Korea since the 2014 sinking of the ferry Sewol that killed 304 people, mostly high school students.

Among the victims of this tragedy, 20 foreigners are dead. Iran, Uzbekistan, China and Norway are among the countries of origin of the deceased foreigners.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government said on Sunday it had received about 355 missing person reports following the fatal stampede.
