28th Session of UCLG Africa Executive Committee Kicks Off in Tangier

Tangier – The 28th session of the Executive Committee of United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa) opened Tuesday in Tangier, in the presence of leaders and elected officials of African regional and local governments, as well as honorary members of the organization.

Speaking on this occasion, chairman of the Moroccan Association of Presidents of Communal Councils (AMPCC), Mounir Laymouri, emphasized the central role played by UCLG in the inclusion of cities and local authorities at the heart of the sustainable development project, noting that this meeting in Tangier is an opportunity to promote joint action at the level of the Continent to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), especially since it takes place in a city that has always been the nucleus of several successful initiatives of cooperation and solidarity in Africa.

Laymouri noted that the city of Tangier will be, during this stage of joint action, an African platform for unified reflection on the issue of local development, especially since this step comes in a context marked by several challenges that should be met by African local elected officials, including the issue of local management and questions related to climate change.

He said that the dynamics of the organization’s action draws its essence from the commitment to the continent’s issues related to local development, the preservation of the rights of future generations and the enshrining of the common awareness of the reality of Africa and its potentialities.

For her part, president of United Cities and Local Governments of Africa, Fatimetou Abdel Malick, expressed the gratitude of UCLG Africa to HM King Mohammed VI for his constant support to the organization since the establishment of its headquarters in Rabat in January 2008.

She also thanked the Moroccan government for the multiform support provided to the organization, and the AMPCC for hosting this second meeting of the Executive Committee in Tangier, praising the role played by the African delegation to the UCLG World Congress, which took place from 10 to 14 October in Daejeon (South Korea), in safeguarding the unity within UCLG World.
