Recent Rainfall to Have Positive Impact on Vegetation Cover, Agricultural Activities (Minister)

Rabat – The recent rainfall will have a positive impact on the vegetation cover and agricultural activities, the Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fishing, Rural Development and Water and Forests, Mohammed Sadiki, said on Tuesday.

In response to an oral question at the House of Councillors on “the current agricultural season”, Sadiki said that the latest rains have affected several regions and reached 90 mm until Monday, a decrease of 20% compared to a normal year (110 mm), and an increase of 82% compared to the previous season (84.6 mm).

The Minister also noted that this rainfall will have a positive effect on the pace of autumn crops, fruit trees and fodder crops, as well as dam reservoirs and groundwater reserves, noting that dam water for agricultural purposes amounted to 3.23 billion cubic meters, a filling rate of about 24%, and a deficit rate of 25% compared to the previous season.

Regarding the measures taken for the current agricultural campaign, Sadiki said that the subsidy of prices of selected seeds has been established at 389 million dirhams, to secure 1.1 million quintals of selected seeds for the three main cereals, adding that sales have reached, so far, 900,000 quintals, with subsidized prices at 30%, as well as sugar beet seeds for an area of 50,000 hectares.
