Merchant Vessel Runs Aground off M’diq Coast

M’diq – A merchant vessel, coming from the port of Uruguay and bound for Lebanon, ran aground on Saturday off the coast of Marina Samir in M’diq (Northern Morocco), according to the local authorities of the M’diq-Fnideq prefecture.

The grounding of this ship would be due to an engine failure and adverse weather conditions, said the same source.

Immediately informed of the incident, the authorities and services concerned went to the scene, with the mobilization of human and logistical means necessary, which allowed to rescue 8 crew members of the ship, while search efforts are continuing to find a missing person.

The response teams are also concentrating their efforts on securing and protecting the coastline from pollution, in the face of a possible fuel leak from the ship’s tank.

A military helicopter and all the necessary equipment have been mobilized for this purpose.
