Morocco Convinced that AU Institutional Reform Is Vector for Growth (Moroccan Delegation)

Addis Ababa – Morocco is convinced that the institutional reform of the African Union (AU) is a vector for growth that should help accelerate the overall economic and social transformation programs of the African continent, said Saturday the Moroccan delegation before the 36th Summit of the pan-African organization held in Addis Ababa.

The vision of the AU institutional reform that Morocco fully supports is based on a comprehensive approach in favor of development and promotion of peace and stability on the continent, the Moroccan delegation stressed.

Morocco considers that this reform should be inclusive, holistic, transparent and participatory, based on the principle of ownership and resting on the parameters of realism and pragmatism, the Moroccan delegation reiterated.

In this sense and despite the enormous challenges, Morocco recalls that it is necessary to move forward in the pending priority reforms in order to restore this institution to its rightful role within the AU administrative architecture and thus strengthen its institutional credibility, added the Moroccan delegation, which reaffirmed the Kingdom’s readiness to play a facilitating role to advance this process, bearing in mind its strategic dimensions.

More concretely, Morocco expresses its readiness to contribute to the capacity building of the AU Institutional Reform Unit, the Moroccan delegation said.

Faithful to its commitment to support the AU agenda, Morocco has backed from the beginning and still supports the Union’s institutional reform, which will consolidate the credibility and strengthening the effectiveness of this continental organization, recalled the Moroccan delegation.

Since it joined the Advisory Committee on the AU institutional reform, the Kingdom has spared no effort to bring the reform to fruition in the direction desired by its champion, President Paule Kagame. A long road has been travelled, but there are still actions to be taken to perfect the union, the Moroccan delegation stressed.

The Summit of Heads of State and Government of the 54 member countries of the African Union began in the morning the proceedings of the 36th ordinary session.
