‘Bghatha Lwa9t’: New Campaign Aims to Develop Gender Equality-Friendly Legislation

Rabat – The Collective for an Egalitarian Legislation (CLÉ) on Tuesday launched a large-scale campaign bearing the slogan “Baghtha Lwa9t: Let’s Change the Laws,” with the aim of developing legislation guaranteeing gender equality.

On this occasion, Nouzha Skali, head of the steering committee of the collective, told MAP that this campaign is based on a report from the joint work of relevant associations that fight for equity and equality between the sexes.

Skalli stressed that this project, on which the CLÉ has been working for over two years, has resulted in a series of recommendations relating to the various Moroccan laws that have a direct and indirect impact on gender equality, and which have been studied in the light of a philosophy consistent with the requirements of the Constitution and international conventions ratified by Morocco.

He explained that the report focuses on a number of articles of the Family Code, as well as texts relating to criminal law, which needed to be revised or updated in the interest of a society based on human dignity for all, women and men.

For her part, director Sonia Terrab, artistic producer of the campaign “#BghathaLwa9t”, said in a similar statement that this campaign, which is supported by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), addresses a range of important societal issues such as child marriage, child custody and domestic violence among others.

She added that the purpose of the realization of this report is to serve as a mechanism on which various associations, institutions, parliamentary bodies and official organizations will work in the future.

In order for this campaign to have a great resonance with the different social circles of the Kingdom, a group of artists and female influencers were involved, including Samia Akariou, Nora Skali, Loubna El Jaouhari, Bouchra Ahrich, Fatim-Zahra Qanboua, Saadia Ladib, Sofia Belkamel and Faty El Jaouhari.
