Eid Al-Adha: 5.4 Mln Head of Sheep and Goats Identified (Minister)

Rabat – Some 5.4 million head of sheep and goats for slaughter have been identified by the national food safety office (ONSSA), said Mohamed Sadiki, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests, on Thursday, underlining that preparations for Eid Al-Adha have reached an advanced stage.

In a presentation before the Government Council on preparations for Eid Al-Adha, Sadiki noted that 214,000 units for breeding and fattening sheep for the Eid had been registered with ONSSA, noting that these units were being rigorously monitored, said the Minister Delegate for Relations with Parliament and Government Spokesman, Mustapha Baitas, at a press briefing following the Council’s meeting.

In order to strengthen the infrastructures for buying and selling animals intended for the Eid, the Minister stressed that 34 temporary markets will be created and fitted out for this occasion in different regions of the Kingdom, noting that these markets will only receive sheep and goats identified by ONSSA services in collaboration with professional organizations.

He also pointed out that the veterinary services were constantly monitoring the health of livestock by stepping up field and microbiological controls, as well as the quality of livestock feed, stressing that the health of the national herd remained “globally satisfactory”.
