President of Cabo Verde National Assembly Reiterates his Country’s Support for Morocco’s Territorial Integrity

Marrakech – President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Cabo Verde, Austelino Tavares Correia, reiterated on Tuesday in Marrakech his country’s support for the Kingdom’s territorial integrity and the Moroccan autonomy plan.

“As President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Cabo Verde, I reaffirm Cabo Verde’s position in favor of Morocco’s territorial integrity,” stressed Tavares Correia in a statement to the press following his talks with speaker of the House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi Alami, and speaker of the House of Advisors, Naam Miyara, on the sidelines of the Parliamentary Conference on Interfaith Dialogue.

Affirming that Cabo Verde “considers the Sahara to be an integral part of Morocco”, Tavares Correia expressed his country’s support for the autonomy plan put forward by the Kingdom to settle the conflict over the Moroccan Sahara.

In this respect, the president of the National Assembly of Cabo Verde stressed that the UN is “the exclusive framework” for finding a solution to the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

In a document sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates on May 23, 2023, the government of the Republic of Cabo Verde reiterated its support for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and reaffirmed its support for the autonomy plan presented by Morocco as the “one and only credible and realistic solution to resolving the dispute” over the Sahara.

With regard to his talks with the speakers of the Moroccan Parliament, Tavares Correia indicated that this meeting was an opportunity to highlight the excellent relations of cooperation and friendship between the two countries, noting that the Parliaments of Morocco and Cabo Verde are working to further strengthen their parliamentary relations and parliamentary diplomacy, notably through the parliamentary friendship groups of the two countries.

The president of the National Assembly of Cabo Verde noted that bilateral relations had been boosted by the opening of the Cabo Verdean embassy in Rabat last year, the visit of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Cabo Verde, Jose Ulisses Correia E Silva, to Morocco last month, and the holding of the Morocco-Cabo Verde Joint Cooperation Commission, which resulted in the signing of several cooperation agreements in various fields.
