Morocco’s Pioneering Experience in Managing Migration Issues, its Efforts to Promote Genuine Migration Governance Highlighted in Marrakech

Marrakech – Morocco’s pioneering experience in managing migration issues and the Kingdom’s efforts to promote genuine migration governance at both regional and international levels were highlighted on Friday in Marrakech.

Several speakers at the two-day thematic meeting on humanized border management, held as part of the Rabat Process, were unanimous in praising the Kingdom’s tireless efforts, under the enlightened and wise leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, to manage migration issues, with a focus on a series of initiatives adopted as part of the Kingdom’s commitments to promote and protect the fundamental rights and dignity of migrants.

A number of speakers, including representatives of States, international organizations, experts and researchers on migration issues, took the opportunity to describe Morocco as a “champion” in the field of migration.

In a statement to MAP on this occasion, Abderrazzak El Hannouchi, a researcher and civil society actor, highlighted the many initiatives taken by Morocco to lay the foundations for genuine migration governance at both regional and international levels.

In this regard, he stressed the importance of this meeting, which offered an opportunity to reflect on what is being done in the Moroccan experience, given that a new migration policy has been in place in the kingdom since 2013, with a significant dose of humanism.

The Kingdom’s efforts have also been reflected in the two operations to regularize the situation of some 50,000 migrants in Morocco, enabling them to enjoy their full rights, as well as the implementation of a National Immigration and Asylum Strategy (SNIA), he added.

El Hannouchi also welcomed the holding in Morocco of this thematic meeting, which is of capital importance insofar as it has brought together a multidisciplinary group of officials, border migration managers, experts, representatives of national and international NGOs, as well as UN agencies.
