Israel’s Recognition of Morocco’s Sovereignty over its Sahara, the Result of HM the King’s ‘Forward-looking Leadership’ (Peter Pham)

Washington – The decision of the State of Israel to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara is the result of “the forward-looking leadership” of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, backed by “an insightful vision forged in patience and historical legitimacy,” said Monday Peter Pham, a high-profile member of the prestigious US American think tank The Atlantic Council.

“In addition to Israel and the United States, African countries and several other Nations have expressed their clear and unequivocal support for Morocco’s legitimate rights over its southern provinces,” the US Special Envoy for the Sahel and the Great Lakes regions under the Trump administration told MAP, noting that several of these countries have opened consulates general in the cities of Laayoune and Dakhla.

Mr. Pham stressed that this recognition reflects “the effectiveness of Moroccan diplomacy which stands out for its active and proactive approach under the far-sighted leadership of His Majesty the King”.

A statement by the Royal Office said that HM King Mohammed VI has received a letter from the Prime Minister of the State of Israel, Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu, in which the Israeli Prime Minister brought to the Very High Attention of the Sovereign the decision of the State of Israel to “recognize the sovereignty of Morocco over the territory of Western Sahara.”

In this respect, the Israeli Prime Minister stressed that his country’s position will be “reflected in all relevant acts and documents of the Israeli Government.”

He also underlined that the decision would be forwarded to the United Nations, to regional and international organizations of which Israel is a member, and to all countries with which Israel maintains diplomatic relations.

In his letter to the Sovereign, the Israeli Prime Minister pointed out that his country is positively examining “the opening of a consulate in the city of Dakhla,” as part of the implementation of this state decision.
