Death in Dec. 2022 of Spanish Inmate: Administration of Tangier 2 Local Prison Denies Allegations of Medical Negligence (Clarification)

Rabat – The administration of the Tangier 2 local prison on Sunday denied what was published on an electronic site regarding the causes of death of a Spanish-born inmate and allegations by a Spanish association of alleged medical negligence.

In a clarification, the same source pointed out that this inmate died on December 3, 2022 during his transfer to hospital following a suicide attempt using his trouser lace, which he wrapped around his neck and tied to his cell’s toilet window.

The prison administration also reported that the inmate in question was suffering from digestive cancer, noting that he had initially refused to undergo chemotherapy or any surgery.

It stated that on October 27, 2021, he refused to undergo surgery, before agreeing to undergo another on November 13, 2022, following the intervention of family members and representatives of the Spanish Consulate, while refusing to undergo chemotherapy at the Sheikh Zayed Hospital, where he had been admitted on February 22, 2022.

The same source stressed that during the period of his incarceration, he benefited from 36 medical examinations within the penal institution and 40 medical consultations in hospitals, as well as five admissions to a public hospital.
