“I am proud of the performance of the players. The national team has always given its best,” he said at the press conference held after the victory (2-1) of South Africa against Morocco in the final of the 2022 WAFCON.
“We will continue the work. This is just the beginning of a new adventure,” said the national coach, noting that the Moroccan team will now begin preparations for the 2023 World Cup.
“We had a few opportunities in this final but failed to achieve them. After the reduction of the score, we hoped for a reversal of situation, but the team was tired after the semi-finals against Nigeria,” he explained. “South Africa was more realistic and better than us,” Pedros admitted.
“Thanks to this AFCON, we have shown people that Moroccan women’s football brings happiness,” he stressed, assuring that “the enthusiasm generated by the competition is fantastic.”
For her part, Desiree Ellis, coach of South Africa, said that “the players were extraordinary and have done well.”
“Against the host country, we expected a very tough match, but the players were well focused,” she said.
South Africa won its first African title in this competition thanks to a double from Hildah Magaia (63rd, 71st). Rosella Ayane reduced the gap for the national team in the 80th minute.
