Golf: Morocco to Field Two Teams at 2022 World Amateur Team Championships in France

Casablanca – Morocco will field two teams at the 2022 World Amateur Team Championships to be held in Paris, on the courses of the Golf National and Saint-Nom-La-Bretèche, from August 24 to September 3, announced the Royal Moroccan Golf Federation (FRMG).

“Organized by the IGF (International Golf Federation) and hosted this year by the French Golf Federation, this biennial event will take place as usual in two stages,” FRMG explained in a statement.

“During the first week, the world’s elite women’s amateur golfers will compete in the Espirito Santo Trophy, whose title is defended by the United States,” the same source further noted.

“In the second week, their male counterparts play the Eisenhower Trophy, which Denmark won in 2018,” FRMG explained, noting that the event could not be held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The regular presence of players from the Federal Elite Pole in events of this magnitude reinforces the Royal Moroccan Golf Federation, chaired by His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid, in its efforts to train high-level players with the aim of making them champions capable of competing with the world’s golfing elite,” the statement said.

For its 29th edition (from 24 to 27 August) the Espirito Santo Trophy will have no less than 56 nations registered, including Morocco which will be the only Arab nation represented, notes the release.

It further states that the national women’s selection will be composed of Sofia Cherif Essakali, winner last week of a tournament AJGA (first junior circuit of the United States), Rim Imni, Moroccan champion in title, and Malak Bouraeda author of a historic qualification for the US Women’s Open last May.

“Our young players discover with pleasure the courses of the world championship, it is a young and motivated team that discovers the competition at this level. It is a great experience to face the best teams in the world in the most prestigious amateur team competition”, explains Olivier Edmond, National Technical Director, quoted in the press release, who says that the objective will be to make a better result than the previous edition.

On the men’s side, 71 nations will take part in the 32nd edition of the Einsenhower Trophy, from August 31 to September 3. “Our representatives will have at heart to carry high the colors of the national flag in this prestigious amateur tournament, whose record is loaded with legendary names such as Jack Nicklaus or Tiger Woods, “says the same source.
