This agreement was inked by Sediko Douka, Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy and Digitalization of ECOWAS, Mallam Mele Kolo Kyari, CEO of the National Nigerian Petroleum Company Limited “NNPC” and Amina Benkhadra, Director General of the Office National des Hydrocarbures et des Mines “ONHYM”.
This agreement confirms the commitment of ECOWAS and all the countries involved to contribute to the feasibility of this important project which, once completed, will provide gas to all West African countries and will also provide a new export route to Europe.
This strategic Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline project, which stems from the far-sighted vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, will run along the West African coast from Nigeria, through Benin, Togo, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Gambia, Senegal and Mauritania to Morocco.
It will be connected to the Maghreb Europe Gas Pipeline and the European gas network and will also supply the landlocked states of Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali.
This strategic project will contribute to improving the standard of living of the populations, integrating the economies of the sub-region and mitigating desertification through a sustainable and reliable gas supply.
The pipeline will have a significant economic impact on the region by harnessing clean energy that meets the continent’s new commitments to environmental protection. It will also give Africa a new economic, political and strategic dimension.
