Speaking at the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding relating to the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Kingdom of Morocco, the official noted that the project would allow for the delivery of more than 5,000 billion cubic meters of proven natural gas reserves, which will boost electricity production and solve the problems of accessibility to energy in most of the countries through which it passes.
It should benefit nearly 400 million people in the region and improve the economic and social well-being of its populations, she noted.
The signing of the MoU is a crucial step in the development of this strategic project that emanates from the vision of the two heads of state HM King Mohammed VI and Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who share this vision of development of our continent and of West Africa in particular as 16 countries are involved, including three landlocked ones, Benkhadra pointed out.
Engineering studies are progressing “very well,” the ONHYM chief added, thanking ECOWAS, which has participated in the project since the beginning and shows its commitment to accompany the project by signing the MoU.
The Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline is a strategic project that will “contribute to the acceleration of the development of our sub-region, provide electricity under better conditions, ensure regional integration of our economies and contribute to industrial and mining development,” she stated.
It will also accelerate the development of all sectors thanks to clean and sustainable energy, available not only in Nigeria but also in Senegal and Mauritania, Benkhadra said.
