Morocco, Sweden Discuss Means to Promote Cooperation

Stockholm – The strengthening of cooperation between Morocco and Sweden and the diversification of its aspects were the focus of a working visit made, on September 15 and 16 in Gothenburg, by the Ambassador of the Kingdom to Sweden, Karim Medrek.

Medrek met with the mayor of the city of Gothenburg, Anneli Rhedin, as well as many economic actors.

At the City Hall, the diplomat discussed ways to strengthen ties between the city of County Västra Götalands Iän and other cities in the Kingdom, especially since a significant Moroccan community, “fully and successfully integrated”, resides in this city of over 600,000 inhabitants.

Medrek and Anneli Rhedin identified renewable energy as a sector with enormous opportunities for cooperation. The exchange of experience and expertise between Gothenburg and Moroccan cities can only be mutually beneficial, given the Moroccan leadership in this area, but also because of the importance given to this sector in local management in Sweden.

On this occasion, Medrek highlighted the importance given to this area, which is part of a national strategy for sustainable development adopted by Morocco that aims to strengthen and preserve the balance between environmental, economic and social dimensions.

Well beyond the environmental aspect and the protection of the environment, this strategy, stressed Medrek, is meant to be comprehensive and multisectoral, and sets as an objective the strengthening of social cohesion, including the promotion of the empowerment of women and gender policy.

Medrek and Anneli Rhedin agreed, at the end of discussions, to maintain a constructive exchange to bring together Gothenburg and Moroccan cities, and establish a sustainable cooperation in the areas of urban management, water management or local governance.

In addition, during a field visit to the site of Volvo Trucks, Medrek highlighted the various reforms initiated by HM King Mohammed VI, which have enabled Morocco to integrate the global value chains in several areas, including the industrial sector.

In this regard, the Moroccan diplomat, while recalling the dynamism of the Moroccan economy and its resilience, thanks to skilled human resources, infrastructure and the commitment of the State in the framework of sustainable development, underlined that such progress has earned the Kingdom to stand out, today, as the leader in the automotive industry in Africa and the Middle East.

The presence of several international players in the automotive industry in the country is not fortuitous and demonstrates perfectly the competitive advantage of Morocco on this sector, he added.

The ambassador said that, thanks to its geopolitical position and its expertise, the automotive sector in Morocco has risen over the past two decades to sustained levels of growth, allowing the Kingdom to establish itself as a spearhead of the automotive industry on the continent.

Morocco is now a platform for production and export of automotive equipment and vehicles, a position that reinforces the establishment in the country of more than 250 national and international players in the sector, he said.

In this sens, Medrek invited the leaders of Volvo Trucks to seize this momentum and join this dynamic by strengthening their position in Morocco.

For their part, the officials of Volvo Trucks praised the work undertaken by the Kingdom and expressed their desire to strengthen their presence Morocco.
