MEP Blasts Algeria’s ‘Repeated Violation’ of its Trade Commitments

Brussels – MEP Inmaculada Rodríguez-Piñero on Monday blasted “the repeated violation” by Algeria of its trade commitments to Spain and the European Union, calling this attitude “unacceptable.”

“‘It is clear that we have a trade problem with Algeria. And not only Spain,” tweeted the Spanish MEP of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats at the European Parliament.

In recent years, EU exports to the Maghreb country have fallen by 60% due to the increase in trade barriers, she wrote.

This repeated violation of the association agreement (linking the EU and Algeria) is unacceptable,” Rodríguez-Piñero added.

It is not the first time Algeria’s trade practices with the EU and some Member States are singled out at the European Parliament, with MEPs questioning “the reliability” of the Algerian-European partnership.
