Morocco was also re-elected as a member of the ITU Radio Regulations Board (RRB), in the person of Hassan Talib, telecommunications engineer and head of the Technical Control Division at the National Agency for Telecommunications Regulation (ANRT), who came out on top with 131 votes, the same source added, recalling that the Kingdom has been a member of this board, continuously, since 1998.
This double election is a clear recognition by the community of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) of the active role of Morocco and its contribution known and recognized in the development of policies and broad strategy of the Union in the field of telecommunications and digital, said the statement.
This is also a real crowning achievement of the efforts made by Morocco to make ICT a tool for socio-economic development through a policy based on liberalization, openness, generalization and equity in the access of developing countries to ICT, in accordance with the High Directions of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist him, the same source added.
ITU is the United Nations specialized agency for information and communications technologies (ICT). It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and has 193 Member States, ICT regulators, major academic institutions and more than 700 private sector companies.
It allocates radio frequencies and satellite orbits worldwide, develops the technical standards that ensure the seamless interconnection of networks and technologies, and works to improve access to ICT for underserved communities.
The ITU operates in three core areas: radiocommunications, standardization and development. The ITU Council, one of the organization’s governing bodies, has the role, among others, of reviewing major telecommunication policy issues and reporting on the Union’s policy and strategic planning.
For its part, the RRB is a board composed of twelve members elected for their qualifications and experience in the field of radiocommunications. It is responsible for approving the rules and provisions relating to the regulation of radiocommunications, including the assignment and use of frequencies, and ensuring their compliance by ITU Member States.
Thanks to the success of these two bids, the Kingdom will be able to continue its commitment to the ITU for the consolidation of global cooperation in the fields of information technology for sustainable development and growth stimulation, according to the Ministry, which said that these elections to the ITU bodies are part of the successive successes of Morocco in the elections in the UN system, which confirms the credibility enjoyed by the Kingdom with the member states of the ITU.
This also constitutes the culmination of a strong diplomatic campaign conducted for months by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad in close collaboration with the Ministry Delegate to the Head of Government, responsible for the Digital Transition and Administrative Reform and the ANRT, concluded the statement.
