UAE Reaffirms ‘Full Support’ for Morocco’s Sovereignty over its Sahara

United Nations – The United Arab Emirates reiterated, in New York, its “full support” for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and the measures the Kingdom is taking to defend its legitimate rights and just causes.

“My country supports the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco in 2007 and which the Security Council has described as serious and credible,” said the UAE representative before the members of the 4th Committee of the UN General Assembly.

This initiative represents an “important solution” in line with the Charter and resolutions of the United Nations and preserves the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco, she noted.

Welcoming the holding in Geneva of two round table meetings in 2018 and 2019, the Emirati official stressed the importance of resuming this process to achieve a political solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

She also welcomed the first tour of the Personal Envoy of the UN SG for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura in the region, as well as his continued efforts to revive the roundtable process.

By the same occasion, she highlighted the sustained efforts of Morocco to improve the living conditions of the populations of the southern provinces, as well as the human development index in this region under the new development model launched by HM King Mohammed VI in 2015.

The diplomat also recalled that the United Arab Emirates have opened a consulate general in the Moroccan Sahara, following the example of other countries, reflecting the firm attachment to the sovereignty of Morocco over its Sahara and its territorial integrity.
