Mexico Announces Bid to Host 2036 Olympic Games

Mexico City – Mexico on Wednesday officially announced its bid to host the Olympic Games in 2036.

“At six months of its 100th birthday, the Mexican Olympic Committee is proud to begin the road towards a new organization of the Olympic Games in 2036”, indicated the president of the committee, María José Alcalá, former Olympic diver.

Approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the candidature of Mexico is for the moment the only one in the running. Egypt indicated that it considered to be candidate.

According to María José Alcalá, the mentality has changed in the IOC.

“The Olympic Games have changed, the president of the committee, Thomas Bach, has made sure that countries can participate without being in debt, without having to achieve great economic feats, but simply being sites with a great capacity for organization and sustainability.”

“If Mexico proposes something, it’s because it will achieve it,” assured Marcelo Ebrard, the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Mexico is “a sports power that will host the World Cup in 2026 [jointly with the United States and Canada]; the only country to host it three times”, after 1970 and 1986, he said.
