At a press briefing devoted to the presentation of the monthly assessment of the epidemiological situation relating to Covid-19 in Morocco, Mrabet pointed out that two thirds of the cases of infection were recorded in the regions of Rabat-Salé-Kenitra and Casablanca-Settat, noting that after a fourth period of three months, marked by a poor dissemination of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the level of spread has rebounded again, as expected.
He said that the weekly positivity rate has increased significantly to reach 2.1% in the last week, after stagnating at less than 1% for more than two months, estimating that “these two indicators mean that we have entered, most likely, in a fifth wave of community circulation of the virus”, waiting for the vision to become clearer by the end of this week.
Regarding serious and critical cases, the official assured that they are still “very limited”, given that only three cases were admitted to the resuscitation and intensive care services during the first week of this month, while no case is under artificial respiration.
He also stressed that cases of death are at their lowest level since the beginning of the pandemic nationwide, reporting only one fatality per week during the last interval.
Regarding the variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus circulating in Morocco, Mrabet noted that Omicron is ubiquitous with different sub-variants, dominated by BA.5.
As far as concern the national vaccination campaign, the official said that the coverage rate by the booster dose has reached 18.7% of the population, with a continuity rate equivalent to 29.3%.
The Ministry of Health and Social Protection urgently urges the elderly, in situations of immune vulnerability and those with chronic diseases to receive the booster dose to raise the level of immunity against Covid-19, recalled Mrabet, adding that the Ministry also calls on all citizens with respiratory symptoms to wear a mask and see a doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
