Climate Change Performance Index 2023: Morocco Gains One Place, Ranks 4th in World

Rabat – Morocco has gained a place this year among the top ten best performing countries in terms of climate, according to the 2023 Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI), compiled by the non-governmental organizations Germanwatch, the Climate Action Network and the New Climate Institute.

Morocco is ahead of Chile (3rd), Sweden (2nd) and Denmark (1st), the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development (Sustainable Development Department) said on Tuesday in a statement.

The countries that were the subject of this assessment (60 countries, plus the European Union) and which together account for 90% of global greenhouse gas emissions, were ranked on the basis of a grid of 14 indicators in four categories, namely renewable energy, greenhouse gas emissions, energy use and climate policy, added the statement.

First in Africa and in the Arab world, Morocco owes this position to its nationally determined contribution (NDC), considered among the most ambitious at the international level thanks to its alignment with the trajectory of a global warming of less than 1.5° C, in accordance with the Paris Agreement on climate, as well as the efforts made in the framework of its energy strategy for the development of renewable and clean energy, according to the same source.

Morocco also received a high score for its international climate policy, particularly in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. After COP22, Morocco’s strong commitment to the Paris Agreement, its active participation in global climate alliances as well as the ambitious regional initiatives it has launched under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, give it a pioneering role in energy and sustainability on the African continent, said the ministry.

In addition, Morocco has honored all of its commitments under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in terms of reporting, including the submission of four National Communications and three bi-annual updates on its greenhouse gas mitigation efforts.

The Climate Performance Index is an independent monitoring tool to track countries’ performance on climate protection.

It aims to increase the transparency of international climate change policy and allows comparison of climate protection efforts and progress by individual countries.
