COP27: Morocco’s Regions Sign MoU with Local Governments Coalition to Reduce Climate Change Effects

Sharm el-Sheikh – The regions of Morocco signed, on Wednesday on the sidelines of the Climate Conference in Sharm el-Sheikh (COP 27), memoranda of understanding with the global network, the Local Governments Coalition (Under 2 Coalition), aiming to accelerate the action of regions in favor of the climate and limit the effects of climate change.

These agreements aim to develop a common framework by identifying climate-related needs and opportunities for the twelve regions, as well as to benefit from possible support in this area.

They also aim to promote the role of regional councils in fostering climate cooperation with their international counterparts.

The partnership with the Under 2 Coalition offers promising prospects for realizing the full potential of climate action for regions through learning opportunities, sharing of knowledge and technical expertise, and relevant areas for cooperation and exchange.

Through these agreements, Morocco will be represented by all its regions within this group, in addition to the Association of Regions of Morocco (ARM), which had previously signed a memorandum of understanding as a general framework in this area with the same group in New York, on September 19, during the “Climate Week” coinciding with the work of the seventy-seventh session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The Association of Regions of Morocco is taking part in the work of COP 27 with a delegation that includes the President of the Association, Mbarka Bouaida, the presidents of the regions of Casablanca-Settat, Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima and Draa-Tafilalet, as well as representatives of the regions of Oriental, Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra, Fez-Meknes, Souss-Massa, Beni Mellal-Khenifra, Rabat-Salé-Kenitra and Guelmim-Oued Noun

The global network Under 2 Coalition, includes 270 governments representing 1.75 billion people across North America, Europe, South America, Africa and Asia, and the GDP of its members represents 50% of the world economy.

The countries, governments and parties under the banner of this coalition are discussing their efforts to fight climate change and keep the global temperature rise below two degrees.

On the sidelines of this conference, the Association of Regions of Morocco organized a series of parallel workshops and expanded bilateral meetings with donors to finance climate-related programs, including the French Development Agency (AFD).

On the other hand, the Moroccan delegation representing the regions received several official delegations from countries participating in the conference activities (COP 27), where the experiences of both parties were exchanged and shared, and it was agreed to strengthen cooperation with the aim of developing expertise and building capacity.
