Physical, Sexual Violence against Women Would Cost MAD 2.85 Bln (HCP)

Casablanca – Physical and sexual violence against women would cost some 2.85 billion dirhams, according to the High Commission for Planning (HCP).

In its recent note entitled “Economic cost of violence against girls and women: Expenditure and loss of household income,” based on data provided by the national survey on violence against women and men conducted in 2019 by the HCP with the support of UN WOMEN in Morocco, the HCP indicated that “among all women victims of physical and/or sexual violence in the 12 months preceding the survey in all contexts, 22.8% had to bear, they or their families, direct or indirect costs of violence. The overall cost of violence is estimated at 2.85 billion dirhams.

By relating this cost to the total number of victims, the average cost is about MAD 957 per victim, the same source said, adding that the share of urban areas in the overall economic cost of violence is 72% (2.05 billion dirhams), that of rural areas is 28% (792 million dirhams).

The average cost borne by urban victims (MAD 1,000 per victim) is higher than that of rural victims (MAD 862 per victim), the HCP said, noting that direct costs constitute the bulk of the overall economic cost with a share of 82% (2.33 billion dirhams) against only 18% for indirect costs (517 million dirhams).

The marital space alone accounts for more than two thirds of the overall cost of violence with a share of 70% (a total cost of 1.98 billion dirhams), followed by public places with 16% (448 million dirhams) and the family context with 13% (366 million dirhams).

Regarding the forms of violence, almost 85% of the global cost concerns physical violence (2.4 billion dirhams) and 15.3% sexual violence (436 million dirhams).
