During this session, the Kingdom’s delegation, composed of members of national departments involved in the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, was chaired by the Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Morocco to the OPCW, Mohamed Basri.
Among the items on the agenda of this session were the follow-up of the implementation of the provisions of the Convention, including through the various capacity-building programs of the Member States, the biennial program budget of the Organization for the year 2023-2024, the completion of the process of destruction of declared chemical weapons stockpiles and measures to combat the resurgence of the chemical threat.
In the framework of the general debate, the Permanent Representative of Morocco reiterated the Kingdom’s principled position and its firm commitment to the objectives of disarmament, non-proliferation and the fight against weapons of mass destruction, reaffirming its unwavering support for the objectives of the Convention.
Regarding the strengthening of cooperation between the OPCW and Africa, Basri stressed the importance of active and proactive South-South cooperation, taking into account the specific realities of each State Party and each sub-region.
The election of Morocco for a new term on the OPCW Executive Council for the period 2023-2025 is a testimony of the confidence of the States Parties in the Kingdom, given its continued commitment to the noble objectives of the Convention, which can contribute to a world free of chemical weapons.
