“I congratulate His Majesty King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan people for the historic achievement in the World Cup… Congratulations!” wrote Herzog on his Twitter account.
Several Israeli officials also expressed their congratulations on the Atlas Lions’ qualification to the Final Four.
In a tweet after the end of the match, Minister of Regional Cooperation Issawi Frej said, “We thought for a moment that we had reached the climax, but the Moroccan national team proved today that there are no limits to what is possible, a team that cannot be broken.”
He also expressed his joy that scenes of jubilation broke out spontaneously in the streets bringing together Arabs and Jews.
Thousands of fans took to the streets and squares of Al Quds, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, Tel Aviv, Sderot and Beer Sheva to celebrate the historic achievement of the first Arab and African team to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup.
Morocco will face France in the semi-final.
