France: Three Killed in Paris Shooting (Updated Toll)

Paris – The death toll from a shooting in central Paris on Friday has risen to three, according to a provisional report from the capital’s prosecutor.

The facts took place shortly before noon when a man in his sixties shot in the middle of the street, in the 10th arrondissement of Paris. “A 69-year-old man was arrested and placed in custody,” the prosecutor told the press.

The alleged perpetrator of this shooting had already been arrested a year ago for attacking with a sword a camp of migrants in the 12th arrondissement of the capital, the magistrate noted.

According to the prosecutor of the Republic, the suspect is known to the police and judicial services for another record, in Seine-Saint-Denis. He had just been released recently, she said.

The 60-year-old suffered minor injuries to his face and was taken to hospital, she added.

“An investigation has been opened for murder, voluntary manslaughter and aggravated violence,” the magistrate added.

According to media reports, the anti-terrorist prosecutor’s office is also evaluating the elements to decide whether to take up the case, as the shooting occurred near a foreign cultural center in Paris.

The police prefecture called on the population to avoid the area and “let the emergency services intervene”.

The Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, has announced that he will go to the scene and will hold a press conference around 4:00 pm.
