Essaouira: Hanukkah Celebrated in Friendly Atmosphere

Essaouira – Actors from various backgrounds and dozens of people from different religious denominations met on Monday at the emblematic space “Bayt Dakira” in Essaouira, to celebrate, in a friendly atmosphere, the festival of lights “Hanukkah”.

Initiated by the associations Essaouira-Mogador, MogaJeunes, Salam Lekoulam and Marocains Pluriels, this ceremony, which took place in the presence of Andre Azoulay, Advisor to His Majesty the King and founding President of the Essaouira-Mogador Association, was an opportunity for members of the Moroccan community of the Jewish faith, Muslims and Christians, imbued with the common values of coexistence and diversity, to share moments of joy and celebration and to perpetuate a fraternal tradition illustrating the living together.

In a statement on this occasion to MAP TV channel “M24”, Azoulay stressed that it was “a moving and so significant moment, first of all for what represents this festival of lights for us Jews and Moroccans”.

“This light that illuminates and guides our steps for the better. It is at the same time resilience and rootedness in universality,” explained HM the King’s Advisor, adding that this light “has always been that of all. It has not been that of a community, but that of all my compatriots”.

These are “traditions that are dear to us all,” said Azoulay, explaining that “it is the Moroccan civilization that offers us this opportunity”.

“A strong message that the Kingdom sends to the world: what we experience in Morocco and Essaouira today cannot be experienced elsewhere, which reflects the true and authentic Moroccan stamp,” he concluded.
