Laayoune: Over 1.8 T of Chira Seized in Foiled Drug Trafficking Attempt

Rabat – Elements of the anti-gang squad of the Laayoune police prefecture managed, in the early hours of Tuesday, to foil an international drug trafficking attempt, seizing 1 ton and 829 kg of chira, based on detailed information provided by the services of the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST).

The National Police (DGSN) said in a statement that the operations conducted in this case have resulted in the arrest of seven people aged 35 to 49 years for their alleged involvement in a criminal network that engages in international drug trafficking.

The searches conducted in the vicinity of the city of Tarfaya, located 70 km from Laayoune, resulted in the seizure of 51 packages of chira whose weight is estimated at 1 ton and 829 kg, as well as a 4×4 car, two dinghies and two outboard motors, in addition to a sum of money amounting to MAD 229,660 suspected of being originated from drug trafficking, said the statement.

The suspects were subjected to the judicial investigation supervised by the competent prosecutor’s office, in order to determine the potential ramifications of this criminal activity and to arrest all those involved in these criminal acts, the same source concluded.
