Fight Against Religious Extremism: Morocco Is ‘International Reference’ – Rome Islamic Center SG

Rome – Morocco is a “reference” and a “model to follow” in the fight against religious extremism and terrorism, thanks to its “singular” strategy hailed at the international level, the secretary general of the Islamic Center of Rome Abdellah Redouane said Saturday.

In a statement to MAP, in the wake of the arrests made these days by the Moroccan security services of extremists affiliated to Daesh, Redouane said that Morocco is “considered a regional leader in the fight against extremism and radicalization,” noting that “several countries wish to follow the Kingdom in this area.”

According to the head of the Center, which houses the largest mosque in Europe, the Moroccan approach is “comprehensive and multidimensional.”

In addition to the security component, it aims to supervise the religious field, through notably the training of imams, said the SG of the Center, founded in 1995, expressing his willingness to strengthen cooperation with the Mohammed VI Institute for the Training of imams, mourchidines and mourchidates (religious preachers), which is benefiting many countries of its expertise and experience.

Redouane also emphasized the fundamental role of the Commandery of the Faithful institution, guarantor of the stability of the Kingdom and inter-religious diversity, recalling, in this sense, the visit of Pope Francis to Morocco in 2019, at the invitation of HM King Mohammed VI, Commander of the Faithful, which has helped to further radiate the Moroccan model worldwide.

“Through several programs and activities, we work, on our side, to make known and promote the Moroccan example, which advocates the values and practices of a moderate and open Islam, which can serve as a model to many nations,” he concluded.
