Counterterrorism: Morocco at Forefront of Proactive Approach – U.S. Expert

New York – Morocco is at the forefront of the fight against terrorism and violent extremism thanks to a proactive and multidimensional approach, said the American expert in international relations, Irina Tsukerman.

“Morocco has always been at the forefront against the proliferation of extremism in all its forms in North Africa” and beyond, the expert told MAP, in the wake of the recent arrests by Moroccan security services of extremists affiliated to Daesh.

She noted that the Moroccan counter-terrorism strategy deconstructs subversive and evil ideologies that promote violence and hatred.

This strategy is not only based on an effective and efficient security and intelligence approach, but also involves the fields of education and religion, explained Tsukerman, adding that Morocco’s approach is also based on promoting values of peace, living together and acceptance of the other.

The U.S. expert also said that thanks to this strategy “which is successful”, incidents of extremism “are rare and are thwarted with speed”, pointing out that the Moroccan model of combating terrorism and violent extremism enjoys the recognition of the international community.

Extremists are doomed to failure because they have nothing to offer other than violence and empty promises, she stressed, while Morocco, a leading country in several industries that bring prosperity and progress, is irreversibly committed to a trajectory of economic development and cultural influence.
