Tangier: Launching of 2nd Program to Teach Moroccan Arabic, Culture to Foreign Prisoners

Tangier – A ceremony to launch the 2nd edition of the program to teach Moroccan Arabic (Darija) and culture to foreign prisoners was held Friday at the local prison of Tangier 1.

This program, implemented by the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Rehabilitation (DGAPR), in partnership with the Federation of Universities for All, with the support of the German Confederation for Adult Education (DVV), benefits 70 prisoners of 24 nationalities, spread over five prisons.

It aims to help the beneficiaries ease their daily lives within these institutions, and to provide them with opportunities for better integration into society after their release from prison.

The director of the local prison Tangier 1, Abbes Srhilfi, stressed that this initiative aims to facilitate the integration of foreign prisoners in Moroccan society, and allow them to understand the Moroccan culture with multiple tributaries, which is based on foundations, including coexistence and openness to all cultures.

For his part, the director of the office of the German Confederation DVV in Morocco Said Doukali said that this program, the only one of its kind in the Arab world and Africa, aims to give foreign prisoners the opportunity to integrate into Morocco by learning the “darija”, which is the language of daily communication, as well as the culture and civilization Moroccan ancestral.

He stressed that this program embodies the efforts undertaken by Morocco in consolidating the enjoyment of all citizens and residents of their rights, and testifies to the deep understanding of Moroccan institutions of human rights, including the right to lifelong learning, dwelling on a number of initiatives carried out by the institution, in partnership with the DGAPR.
