London: Morocco Reiterates Strong Commitment to Climate Cooperation

London – Morocco is firmly committed to joining forces with the international community to meet the challenges of the 21st century, both by consolidating the governance of the energy transition and by improving the management of its natural capital, stressed, Wednesday in London, the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali.

In her speech, on the occasion of the clean energy forum “Innovation Zero”, Benali stressed that Morocco’s roadmap consists of accelerating the development of renewable energy, decarbonizing the economy in a sustainable manner and building a flexible and resilient energy system.

The Kingdom’s objective is to increase the share of renewable energy in its energy mix to 52% in 2030, against 40% currently, and to build a resilient energy system, she said before an audience of experts and policy makers.

Decarbonization is a key element of this agenda, as Morocco was among the first countries to update its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) with a new ambition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45.5% by 2030.

“We reconfirm our commitment to a global warming scenario of 1.5°C,” she underlined, noting that to achieve its goals, the Kingdom has 61 projects covering seven economic sectors.

While recalling that Morocco was the first country to conclude a Green Partnership with the European Union on energy, climate and environment, Benali stressed the regional integration and the development of connectivity between the electricity, gas and carbon markets to ensure optimal cooperation.
